“UNKNOWN TONGUES”: THE LANGUAGE OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER!

THE APOSTLE PAUL PLAINLY STATED, “FOR HE THAT SPEAKETH IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE SPEAKETH NOT UNTO MEN, BUT UNTO GOD, FOR NO MAN UNDERSTANDETH HIM: HOWBEIT IN THE SPIRIT, HE SPEAKETH MYSTERIES.” (I CORINTHIANS 14:2) It’s amazing to me that such a plain statement has been so misjudged and rejected by the church world. Praying in the Holy Ghost is the most powerful possible Biblical authority for spiritual results. First, let’s ask the question, “Is This Biblical?” and “What are the Biblical Scriptures that support this great truth?”

Jude, the Lord’s half brother in the flesh, gave a Holy Ghost command on this subject. He spoke as a pastor to the saints, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost…” (Jude 20) He knew the flesh was weak and helpless and needed to be constantly strengthened by the Spirit’s power. We do not contain God in a kind of reservoir, but the Holy Ghost is a person that must be constant in our lives. He is not a static power, but a personal power that must flow by regular personal relationship.

Praying in the Holy Ghost is talking to God in His language and the result is a dynamic Christian. There is no book in the Bible that is more New Testament than Romans. It is a Gospel Book that carefully writes the theology of our New Testament church. Paul is careful to show the frailty of flesh and that walking in the Spirit was the single way to please God. He said, “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” (Romans 8:14) That means that unless you are living in the power of the Holy Ghost, you are carnal and helpless. He knew the human weakness, but He knew the Holy Ghost power also and declared its absolute necessity.

Listen as He teaches us about praying in the Holy Ghost. “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27) The Holy Ghost takes my lips and my mind and speaks His Language that goes straight to the Father. The devil does not know this language and cannot learn it, so He cannot stop the direct communication. The Holy Ghost knows the Father’s thoughts and will for you, and prays accordingly, and such praying cannot go unanswered.

Apostle Paul was a spiritual giant because of his spiritual prayer life. You will be either a weak, struggling believer because of your fleshly prayer life or the opposite. Let’s allow Him to state the facts, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all…” (I Corinthians 14:14-15, 18) Such constant communion cannot fail to produce supernatural powers in that life.

Paul demanded order in the great display of Holy Ghost power. He stated, “How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.” (I Corinthians 14:26-28) The church must be a place of Holy Ghost gifts that occur in Biblical order. The lack of Scriptural understanding is evidence of immaturity.

Before the church or any believers rules this out of the church or their lives, they need to remember the words of the Lord in Revelation, “And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Revelation 22:19) God’s church is a Holy Ghost filled church and such a church will shake the foundation of hell.

Every sovereign work of the Holy Ghost will be open to the power of the Holy Ghost. The past history of God’s visitations among His people is a constant testimony. The Quakers were in their day a powerful movement. Listen to this testimony, “In The Message and Mission of Quakerism (p. 17) by W. C. Braithwaite, quoting from Burrough’s Preface to Great Mystery, we read: While waiting upon the Lord in silence, as often we did for many hours together, we received often the pouring down of the Spirit upon us, and our hearts were glad and our tongues loosed and our mouths opened, and we spake with new tongues as the Lord gave us utterance, and as His Spirit led us, which was poured down upon us, on sons and daughters, and the glory of the Father was revealed. And then began to sing praises to the Lord God Almighty and then to the Lamb forever.”

We need to remember Dwight L. Moody and what the Holy Ghost did in his day. Here is a quotation from page 402 of Trials and triumphs of Faith (1875 edition) by the Rev R. Boyd, D. D. (Baptist), who was a very intimate friend of the famous evangelist: “When I (a W.M.C.A. member) got to the rooms of the Young Men’s Christian Association (Victoria Hall, London), I found the meeting “on fire.” The young men were speaking with tongues, prophesying. What on earth did it mean? Only that Moody had been addressing them that afternoon! What manner of man is this? Thought I, but still I did not give him my hand. Many of the clergy were so opposed to the movement that they turned their backs upon our poor, innocent Young Men’s Christian Association for the part we took in the work; but afterward, when the floodgates of divine grace were opened, Sunderland (near London) was taken by storm. I cannot describe Moody’s great meeting. I can only say that the people of Sunderland warmly supported the movement, in spite of their local spiritual advisers.”

A critic of the Holy Ghost and the gift of Tongues wrote despairingly against what was happening connected with the Methodist revivals. He was answered by the great founder of Methodism. The critic was a Dr. Middleton that said, “After the apostolic time, there is not, in all history, one instance either well attested, or even so much as mentioned, of any particular person who had ever exercised that gift (tongues), or pretended to exercise it in any age or country whatever.” John Wesley wrote in protest against this statement (see Wesley’s Works, Vol. V. p. 744), “Sir, your memory fails you again… it has been heard more than once, nor further off than the valleys of Dauphiny.”

It’s time to stop the helpless schemes of religion. We need a visitation from the Father of all graces and mercies. While we need the Father’s supernatural visitation the Father needs some saints that will learn the power of Holy Ghost praying. Quit being a beggar before the throne and become a yielded vessel whom God Himself can take possession and manifest His wonderful authority. Satan will be defeated when Christ’s church is led by the Holy Ghost.

  1. If I stand up and pray in a church in a language they do not know how can they be edified? I may be praying to God and I may be edified using the language but no one listening will be edified. And if a stranger is present they will think Christians are mad (crazy) for allowing such absurdity to be practised. However if I know the language of the assembly then I don’t need to offer my own interpretation of what I have just said, I can instead say it in the language the assembly understands in the first place. However if I do not know their language I should expect a translator in the audience who knows both the language I have spoken and the one that the people understand to translate for me. I experienced this in Haiti, where my knowledge of Creole is limited whereby my message was translated for me by a bilingual brother.

This summary might sound like a worldly interpretation. Surely the gift of languages is something more than that. Certainly it is. You will note that in the Acts when the gift of languages was first demonstrated that as the Apostle Peter spoke, three different language groups heard the message in their own native dialect simultaneously. That is the miracle of the gift of languages when it was first performed. Nothing approaches it today.

  2. Dear brother Joseph.

I consider myself a classic Pentecostal and blieve in tongues. But there has been a misunderstanding of how the gift of tongues and prophesy is to be used. I would like you to go to this web-site,_____________________________ I would suggest that yo read it all. It was in the Asembly of God Journal. The Bible is very clear how tongues are to be used.

  3. My father, born and raised in the Methodist tradition, loved the great spiritual music, really Sacred Music, of the Methodist Church. It was the one thing he regretted giving up when he converted to Catholicism in 1940. At the time, non-Catholic music was by-and-largely forbidden to be sung during Mass since they may contain heretical ideas. After the 2nd Vatican Council much of this music was allowed to be sung during Mass. Papa had said long before, “All music which glorifies God is Catholic,” and his views finally won out.

Notwithstanding, Papa had no use for the hand-clapping, down-home Gospel ditties of what he called “Moody and Sanky music.” He found these tunes mediocre, trivializing and pretty dreadful stuff.

  4. Brother,I have been one such that has thought it was a “gift for its time,” or that the new tongues were unlearned earthly languages, and that the Romans reference meant the Holy Spirit spoke to God in that tongue, although since they “cannot be uttered,” that it did not come through our own lips.
I have seen people, personally, speak “in tongues” (NEVER with an interpreter) in “worship services,” much like the one you posted a short time ago about “Beatles’ music in the church.” It was chaotic, and the fruit of such folks were some of the bitterest and most flesh-driven I have ever seen.

Now I know the danger of building my dcotrine on personal experience. Hey, only NOAH was righetous in his day, so I realize that it is up to each of us to get it right, and get it right from the infallible inspired Word. Please help me, brother, because I do NOT want to mis out on whatever God wants me to do — if it “hairlips the boogeyman,” as an old friend used to say — no mater what the personal cost, I want to be all Jesus wants me to be.
Prayerfully and patiently respond when you can, if the Lord so leads you.
I will, by His grace, be obedient to whatever He tells you to tell me.
Thank you for being the man of God that you are!

  5. you are so right; these modern high society christians have tried to discredit God’s heavenly language; tongues are for a sign; not to them that believe, but to them that believe not; they are of God, and no man can discredit the working of the Holy Ghost.

  6. Hebrews 6: 1 reads:

“Therefore, leaving the principals of the doctrines of Christ, let us go on to perfection.”

Pastor, why do you think there are so few in the church today who are spiritually mature, delighting in the deep things of Christ, as opposed to those feeding on “spiritual milk”?

    Thank you.

  7. tongues is very confusing to me. the bible says it is a gift, 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues.
i have had people tell me that if you dont talk in tongues, you are not saved. i have also seen christians such as kenneth hagin speaking in tongues on t.v. never understanding a word he says..
i have also heard Christians say that unknown tongues is an unknown language.
i cannot speak in tongues and i hope the ones that do dont hold it against me.
1 Corinthians 12:30 Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?

  8. This is certainly one of the topics believers can have genuine disagreements over. I do not pretend to have a final answer, but I would suggest a prayerful reading of 1 Corinthians 12. I believe first and foremost Paul reveals that it is UP TO GOD who gets what gift, and when.
If this is so, no one should be ranked according to the gift God provides to him or her. Speaking in tongues doesn’t make anyone “more holy” or “more blessed” than someone who heals, prophesies, etc. Or, for that matter, the person who sweeps the floor in a church once the service is over.
Better we should thank God that he has given these gifts to us to spread his word.

  9. Cor: says that Tongues us directed to God and not to men but in our church’s we direct tongues to men and that is wrong.

    Misunderstanding Of 1 Corinthians 14:6

Now verse six also must be heard in the light of the definitive assertion (1 Corinthians 14:2) that glossolalia is not directed “to men” but “to God.”

Neither the term, message in tongues,5 nor any of its equivalents (address in tongues, prophecy in tongues) is ever used in the New Testament. Nor is the concept found there using other words. Were the apostle Paul to visit a Pentecostal church today and hear an utterance in tongues followed by an utterance that began, “Hear O my people, I the Lord thy God say unto thee … ,” he would be hearing a supposed “message” in tongues for the first time — a “message,” not just an utterance, and there is, geometrically speaking, a 90-degree difference. He would be hearing for the first time a glossolalist purporting to speak, not to God, but to the congregation.
the problem certainly lies with what could be called the message-type interpretations, which in reality are not interpretations of what was said — at all — but independent prophecies that find a convenient break in the service for their insertion. In other words, the twentieth-century phenomenon, “a message in tongues,” consists of a prophecy juxtaposed to a preceding utterance in tongues, that when all is said and done is never actually translated.
glossolalia is not directed “to men” but “to God.” Only Prophecy is directed to the Church in the language of the people.

  10. He is Risen and because He lives and has overcome, I too shall live. Thank You Jesus!
First the Blood then the Oil. This sermon was well done. The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is given to those blood washed Christians who seek more of Him. Do not seek for tongues – seek the Infilling He will supply the tongues when He comes. Jesus is the Baptizer. Pray, study and tarry at the altar.
Tongues are the external Sign for them who are Chosen to be His Disciples. Seek first the Giftgiver then the gifts will come. God bless and rejoyce in the Risen Christ Jesus.

  11. Sandy Russell

Once you attend a church where this is done correctly, you won’t be confused anymore. Yes, a person who has never been to that particular church will wonder what is going on, but it can be explained by many in the church afterwards.
My church when a man who stands and gives a message in unknown tongues, he is one who commonly does so as it is his “gift”, not everyone is to speak aloud in church in tongues but it does not mean you can’t speak in tongues when you pray or when the spirit touches you. When this man speaks in an unknown tongue it is a little different from his normal voice and is more forceful. there is no other way I can explain it, but to say when I hear the force from his voice, it causes the congregation to go silent. Most lower their heads (I do), not because anyone has told me to, but it feels right in my spirit. Someone then interprets. Those are the most special services to me, because the Lord through the Holy Ghost speaks to the congregation.
But yes, it is more than just flipping out another language and living an unholy life.

  12. Dear Pastor

Just reading Samuel know; Saul was given a new heart and the Lord had gifted him of prophecy. Samuel 10:6. But he did not speak in tongues as it was old testament. Yet spoke as if he was a new man, the Word was with him.

Numbers 22:8 The Lord opened the mouth of the ass, Baalam needed help.

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
This was before the upper room yet no mention of speaking in tongues.

Act2:4 And they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues (even hearing each one in his mother tongue)

II Cor 12:4 How that he was caught up inparadise, and heard unspeakable words, which is not laweful for a man to utter.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession with groanings which cannot be uttered.

When i examine this gift it has a number of variables that appear to be attached with it.

Fisrt of all the Gift of Tongues appears to be of a higher order than our fleshly understanding, if i mock Pastor Chambers & those who belive as him i also mock the Apostle Paul and many others.

There are somewhere between 5000-10000 languages on Earth so why can’t our Faith let us understand the Lord has a better language, after all all things are upheld by his word! What power in His speach. Science has now come to understand that Light itself is sound; a word perhaps?

Now I pray that i too surrender to the Lord Jesus and repent of my unbelief and make room for Him.

    God Bless
    jaimie

  13. Wes Johnson, May I take the liberty of sharing with you? If not, please do not read. As an 11 yr old child I would pray with my grandmother, on our knees. One day , (my grandmother was praying in tongues) she told me to also pray in tongues, she told me to give voice and my prayer language would come. She told me , I would feel like (maybe) I was pretending to talk another language, but God would understand. So, I did . I have been praying in tongues ever since.(Only God understands, and answers)Amazing God we do serve.
What I want to share is this. God is in control of all of our gifts. If Holy Spirit bursts forth from your mouth (in tongues) in church , so be it;He is in control, we are not. Just as the scriptures say, if there is an interpreter the message is usually for a lost soul or souls present. Do not quench Holy Spirit.
God is always speaking to His Church/People.
Holy Spirit is all power and might!!and if there is no interpreter , then it is between you and God. Holy Spirit will give you understanding; as often I have spoken in tongues in church and immediately knew exactly in my spirit what was said, so I immediately spoke the interpretation.
So, what I feel in my spirit is , if someone speaks in tongues in church , should there not be an interpretation, That person has the interpretation.; and should speak it, many do not know to do this.
Again, the Spirit of God is in full control , not us. Yield yourself unto Holy Spirit of God 100% completely , allow Him to speak through you. Nobody can just give up tongues on their own , Holy Spirit does it!!!God Bless you, Joan P.S. if one prays in tongues, it is willingly by the Spirit to God, which there is no interpretation.amen
