Jesus Said, In My Name… They Shall Speak With New Tongues

No subject in the Bible has been misinterpreted or misspoke more often than “Speaking In Tongues.” Satan has fought this truth and imitated this truth until most people simply flee from it. The subject can get a debate going quicker than any subject I know from the Bible. It’s exciting to see how often the truth of a Believer speaking in an unknown language is mentioned. Isaiah, the Statesman prophet, was the first Bible writer that prophesied of the New Testament church speaking in unknown languages. “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear” (Isaiah 28:11-12). The Apostle Paul quoted from this text in his great discourse on the gifts of the Spirit and did so by directly speaking about languages spoken in the Holy Ghost. Paul said, ” In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe” (I Corinthians 14:21-22). I have documented the great church fathers speaking with excitement about the early church like a Heaven on earth because the Holy Ghost had made them alive. Men and women were speaking in unknown languages, some were interpreted and others saints were prophesying or healing the sick by the power of the Spirit. The great teacher, Augustine, is recorded to have bemoaned that the church in the Fifth Century had lost the great visitation of the Holy Ghost, where men and women no longer spoke in unknown languages. This sermon condemns no one but simply lets you hear what will happen when the church is alive in the Spirit instead of cold and asleep.

  1. I believe that when a Christian speaks in tongues that it is a real language everytime just as it was the first time. The word “unknown” is not in the Greek. As you can see it was added.

The language could be one spoken today or one that is no longer used. There has been millions of langues since the time began.

  2. THE BIBLE SAYS THAT TOUNGUS HAVE CEASE AND THEY HAVE! I have read two articals that and they were carismatics churches. They were talking in tougues and there was a person who knew what they were saying and they were cursing God in latin! The same thing happened with another group. The people who were doing tougues were saying hooriable things about God. How can you be for that? I am against Toungues!! Anything that divides is of the devil including KJVonlites.

  3. The great Paul says his spirit prays but he can’t understand and he says that he pray’s in
language of angeles and when GOD gave me this gift I didn’t know what had happened
but some believe GOD has changed and Hebrews 13;8 says Jesus the same yesterday.today and
forever –God’s word does not go into limbo and dissapear as some would like –Paul also
gave the way to edify the Church with its prayer and says that he world rather speak
five words in a known tongue that a thousand in a unknown unless their is a interperter
the bible is clear as to its use and God hasn’t gone away –tongues do not exault me
but thank GOD he gave it to me and may I have the wisdom required with all gifts

  4. To the writter Bill a question yes– it is a language but one the angeles speek and what
language is this–Consider it is the language spoken in heaven and what language is that
it probably the language before the tower of Babel–Paul spoke in known language Hebrew
both dialects.Latin, Greek and he said he spoke in a angel and unknown language.
Bill pray that God gives you a clear picture as LUCIFER try’s to confuse and any of Gods
gifts he try’s to minimise so as the Christian will not have the power JESUS intended
    God bless Lynn

  5. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit from birth, is not once record as having spoken in another tongue. Nor did Jesus ever teach of the need to do so. I am not suggesting tongues is not a valid sign, for it is when the Sprit moves with redemptive purpose. Too often I have witnessed false tongues within the church, which discredits this special gift.

  6. As a non charismatic, could someone explain what some of the spiritual benefits of tongues are? I would think such an experience would greatly deepen your faith. For instance, is prayer enriched; are there new avenues of blessings in assurance, holiness and perfection, ability to discern the Word of God, etc?
I have had moments of such communion with God that tears were shed and great affirmations were felt and each of these moments wonderfully increased my walk with God. I can only imagine that such an experience as spiritual utterances would do as much or more so for a Christian.

  7. kia ora joseph
rarely do you hear anyone using the gift of tongues
i have been at meetings where the speaker backs up his healing ministry with tongues
but it generally is something that they have copied, nothing original.
sometimes i get release in a hymn at church , but not often.
    best wishes

  8. Dear Brother, Speaking in tongues is a great gift of God, it may be the least of the gifts as some may say, but what I like the most about the gift is this, when I am worshipping the Lord in the Spirit I speak mysteries unto Him, the enemy (satan) does “not” know what is being prayed. Unlike tongues for interpretations, I have heard the latter spoken many times with nothing taking place at all in the way of doing what has been given from God. David Day

  9. The Acts account reveals several obvious things regarding thsoe who actually spoke in languages which were understood not be the hearer but not necessarily by the speaker. (1) The only ones observed speaking were Galileans (Acts 2:7 – all the Apostles were Gailileans); and (2)
the hearers mocked them and said “These MEN are full of new wine.” Both of these facts indicate that the women were not heard to speak (I Cor.14:34). I would love to see the documented evidence of great healings of the church fathers who contextually you stated had spoken in tongues. The only factual truth we have is not from the church fathers, but the Word of God. Quoting Augustine may not be the best policy because it was his writings that eventually led to the corrupt texts from which the perversions have come. As a Baptist, I value and treasure the work of the Holy SPirit and confess that we Baptists have set aside His rich and full ministry in the church. I also have always wondered about many missionary friends who have been in language school with those who espouse tongues as a present day gift yet they are attending language school right along side the Baptist. Your ministry is a blessing to me especiall as you have exposed the properity and name it and claim it preachers. God bless you!

  10. I had the experience of receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost as a young woman. I have been used in many church services to give out a message. Many times that message was interpreted by another Holy Ghost filled believer. I don’t say these things to exalt myself but to give praise to God. To experience being used by the Holy Ghost is a very humbling yet strengthening occurrence. Anything that brings reproach to the name of God or His Word is outside what the Bible teaches is of man or Satan and there is much of that out there. I don’t have to wonder about how the Holy Spirit works or if He is real because I experience speaking in tongues for myself and I KNOW He is real. Any born again, sanctified Christian can have the same gift if they desire and ask for it. Praise God!

  11. It is one thing for a believer to use a real language which he did not know previosly in order to o communicate with, and promote the glory of God, to those who normally use and understand that language. THAT is precisely what happened at Pentecost. By the power of the Holy Spirit, each stranger heard and understood the Apostles speaking the Gospel message in his, the stranger’s, own natural language. Glory be to God.

It is quite another thing entirely for a person to babble nonsense syllables and sounds that are not a language and, therefore, provide no understandable communication among any of the others present. Although it may deceive many present, babbling does not glorify God. Many can easily roll nonsense, non-language, sounds from their mouths as a counterfeit “proof” of the presence of the Holy Spirit within them. That merely provides fuel for the skeptics and further “proof” that “holy rollers” are fools at best and deceivers at worst.

Paul indicated that speaking in a “language” that none present can understand or interpret is useless.

  12. Hello Brother Chambers.
You are right about Tongues being controversial. Problem is, this gift can be easily counterfeited either by a human or a demonic spirit using a human to deceive us. There are some Pentecostals that say that being baptyized by the Hloy Spirit ALWAYS is evidenced by the person speaking in tongues. I do not believe this is so. Paul explains the gifts of the Holy Spirit quite clearly in 1 Corinthians 12. Note that he says that different people receive different gifts by “that one and one and the selfsame Spirit, DIVIDING TO EVERY MAN SEVERALLY AS HE WILL.(1 Cor. 12:11). He follows this by explaining how the body has different components to do different things.
An interesting thing I’ve discovered is that when the gift of tongues did occur in Acts, there were always people there whose native language was not Aramaic or Hebrew (Acts 2:1-4, 10:44-48, 19:1-6). This makes a lot of sense as these people would be better edified if they could here the message in their primary languages.
The Isaiah 28:11-12 passage I think could just as easily refer to the acceptance and preaching of the Gospel being done by the Gentiles since most of Jesus’ own race rejected it in languages that certainly would have sounded “strange” and even “stammering” to them.
Yes, the speaking of tongues certainly is a gift of the Holy Spirit, but I think it is unwise to give it more importance than any of the others or to assume it will be given to all Christians, for all the reasons Paul puts forth in 1 Cor. 12.
The Holy Spirit knows what’s needed, when it’s needed and by whom the gift will present itself. So let’s leave it up to him and not demand a particular “sign” as the Pharisees and scribes tried to do from Jesus (Matthew 12:38-39).
I liked the observation from Jim S. that the Bible des not record Jesus ever speaking in another tongue, nor require it from believers. He is absolutely correct!

  13. People lets not run away from the truth as a child of God one must speak in tongues for Jesus said in John 3:8 The wind (spirit) blows wherever it will, and you hear its sound, but you dont know where it is coming from or where its going. So is every one who is born of the spirit.Read it as translated from the Greek and we will understand it clearly ,even Paul explain it clearly (Gal 4:6) Rom 8:15-16,1 corithians 13,Corinthians 14:1-25 For anyone who speaks in a tongue(language)does not speak to men but to God.People who hate tongues then how do you speak to God ,Tongues are there to edify(build)you.Brothers i received the holy spirit because i was hungry for God and needed Him(Jesus) to forgive me,i got baptised and cried out to God to forgive me,and when the word was preached to me i moved forward to receive from Him and as i cried to Him i dont know what happened i flew and landed on the floor cried out to God ,Jesus Jesus Jesus forgive me and what i remember is a voice saying i have forgiven you i have forgiven you,i laid there for maybe more than an hour tears streaming out i could not stand up,i was drunk in the spirit and was muttering a language i did not know,My wife had to support me and to drive i couldnt drive i was shaking like i had fever uncontrolable.People thats why the Devil is blinding people from the truth because he knows the power of it.Ever since i speak more in tongues and His presence just covers me its so amazing. As it was with Moses the tabenacle and cicurmsision so it is so with Jesus and the Holy Ghost its like a mark which Jesus gives to His Children whom God has called and chosen.iam moving from golry to glory in Gods presence.Remove your pride and judgemental opinions and accept Jesus as your savior and see what God will do.Thats why there is no power when the gospel is being preached and the house of God taken as a place of entertaiment.Mak 16 v 15-19 Whoever believes and is baptisedwill be saved ……Jesus says in my name they will drive out demons, in my name they will speak in new tongues,in my namethey will pick up snakes with their hands ….Jesus even informed them not to do anything until they received the holy Ghost Acts 1:4,and in Acts 2 they received the Holy Ghost and spoke in other tongues. The new birth is through the holy spirit that is sent by God to help us,comfort us guild us in all truth, how can you have the truth when you dont have the holy Ghost,we are trying to build our on way not Gods way.The bible explains clearly everything i dont know why we question the word of God,may God open our understanding.

  14. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have
you ignorant. But many are still ignorant today because the church has neglected to teach on
these things. Jesus said, “THESE SIGNS SHALL FOLLOW THEM THAT BELIEVE.” Who would dare to dispute the Son of the Living God?

It’s the same as if a house were wired for electricity but no one contacted the Electric Co. to
turn on the power. You need to get in touch with Jesus so that you can do the works and carry on
His work. You cannot do it without the power of God on you.

Tongues may be that of men or of angels (1 Cor. 13:1-3). Like prophecy, it is God’s desire that
speaking in tongues be practiced by all, but many cannot because of lack of understanding, faith, consecration, and yieldedness to the Spirit. In private it is speaking to God alone, but in church it is for edification.

“Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he that comes to God must believe that He is
and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)

  15. Pastor Steve Hadley of Harvest Family Fellowship Church does a great job of explaining the gift of tongues. Listen to the whole messages as the gift of tongues starts about half way through the message.

  16. What a Devine and great post, words can’t explain the en-dept that Brother Chamber has compiled in these writings for us the readers !

Thank the Lord for Brother Chamber insight.

In my prayer time I often speak in tongues it seems that it gives you more reason to pray longer, and I believing that God will answer those prayers as we intercede for others, as we go to the Master for our needs and the needs of others.

For along time, before I became a “true Christian,” I thought that speaking in tongues was from Satan and I would distance my self from it.

Now as I understand more of God’s Word I do speak in unknown tongue!

When I first heard someone speak in tongue, there where many in Church speaking in tongues, and this made me want to get out of that Church as fast as I could. It took a long time for me to understand what power Christian has when speaking in tongues!

Thank God, I wanted to know more about it.

Thank you Brother Chambers for bring this to us.

As the years went by I had learned a great deal more, also what a Christian should believe in!

    What I believe;

The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God. (Ps. 119; Mat. 4:4; Lk. 24:27)
There is one God, eternally co-existent in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (I Jn.5:7)
In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin Birth, in His Sinless Life, in His Miracles, in His Vicarious and atoning Death, in His Bodily Resurrection, in His Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this Earth in Power and Glory to rule a thousand years. (Jn. 1:1-4; Eph. 2:13-18; Rev. Chpts.19-20)
In the Blessed Hope–the Rapture of the Church at Christ’s Coming. (I Thess.4:13-18)
The only means of being cleansed from sin is through Repentance and Faith in the Precious Blood of Christ. (Rom.5:1;Eph.2:8-9,13-18)
Regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal Salvation. (Jn.3:5-8;Titus 3:5)
The Redemptive Work of Christ on the Cross provides healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer. (Ex.15:25-26;James 5:14-15;I Pet.2:24)
The Baptism with the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, is given to Believers who ask for it. (Acts 2:4;10:44-46;19:1-7)
In the Sanctifying Power of the Holy Spirit by Whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life. (Rom.6:3-14;8:1-2,11)
In the Resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the one to Everlasting Life and the other to everlasting damnation. (Rev.20:5-6,11-15)

    God Bless

  17. Just because many people have come to speaking in tongues though a form of charismatic worshiping, knowledge of speaking in tongues doesn’t mean it is right to speak it or not to speak it.

I believe that the charismatic movement has harmed the Body of Christ, and sending many on the road of destruction! Namely the Benn Hinn’s etc.

By the way I am not a “ charismatic.”

    Be blessed

  18. People please. Let’s stop fighting the word of God. There are no comments, opinions or statements that prove the lack of faith there is in the words of Christ then those who say “it is not necessary”, “it is of Satan”, “it is just babbling un understandable language”, etc. I submit this thought. Maybe to the persons speaking it was babbling but to those who heard it they heard their own language. I do not speak Cantonese (did I spell that right?), but I have heard the language before over the years. A few years ago during Monday night prayer and small child was praying at the alter, she had been there for some time seeking the Lord for the Holy Ghost. Now I know some will take issue with that, so what. Any way as she began to cry out for the Lord to fill her whith His Spirit she began to speak Cantonese, a language I recognized but did not understand. I was edified by this because I believe the Bible. I have FAITH in the WORDS OF CHRIST and HIS PROMISES. I challenge you all who post negative, or misunderstood the promise of Yeshua the Messiah, to get on your knees, fast and pray open your hearts and minds, do not allow the traditions of your fathers, your religions, your fears, your doubts, or those who claim to have the Holy Ghost by speaking in tongues but live an unholy life, hinder you from receiving the gift of the Spirit of God. For to those whom God has given it to will be the ones He will come for when the time comes. WILL YOU BE READY WHEN YESHUA COMES? or WILL YOU ALLOW DOUBT, UNBELIEF, FEAR, MISUNDERSTANDING, TRADITION, AND RELIGION hinder you from being like a wise virgin. Being a nice person after being a hell raiser does not prove you are a Christian or filled with the Holy Ghost. The person who converts to Budism, Hinduism, Rastafarianism, etc. can make the same claim. what seperates the true saint of God from the false religions is GODS’ PROMISES IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS. ALL OF HIS PROMISES regarding the church and speaking in an unkown tongue is just one of the promises. Why would one not desire this gift? FEAR, DOUBT, UNBELIEF, RELIGON, SELFRIGHTEOUSNESS, and the list goes on. Let go and let God have His way. Mia
